US-based marine and offshore classification services provider ABS is collaborating with South Korea's Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) to evaluate the basic design and containment system parameters for an LNG carrier to operate in the Arctic.
The LNG carrier will operate a trade route from the Kara Sea and Barents Sea to Europe or the US.
The study will address issues such as hull strengthening, interaction of the hull structure with the containment system, minimum propulsion power requirements and propeller strength.
For the HHI evaluation, ABS will undertake a hazard identification (HAZID) study to identify potential hazards and risks associated with ice navigation. The HAZID study will also address design issues, natural and regulatory environments and operational scenarios.
In terms of design, the study will evaluate the mode of operation, hull form and ice loads on hull and vibration. From a natural and regulatory perspective, the evaluation will review Russian requirements and metocean and ice data from the region.
