In the truly brilliant first chapter of The True Story of Ah Q, and to a less brilliantly satirical degree throughout the rest of his writings, Lu Xun complained by obvious implication of the tendency of Chinese affairs to go around and around in loops. One wonders how the party responsible for giving Zhong Guo Zhong Yang Dian Shi Tai the English name CCTV meant to relate to that complaint of Lu Xun’s. Do they mean to affim his point or negate it? It is true that it can be gratifying when situations go around and around in loops, but, I submit, only when they do so with subtle and interesting variations. The English term ‘closed circuit television’ contains the words ‘closed circuit’ and those words have to my mind a chilling suggestion of situations that go around and around in loops with no variation whatsoever, subtle or otherwise. Thus I don’t like the term ‘closed circuit television’ even in its ordinary English usage and I certainly do not approve of implicitly linking it with a Chinese television service , especially a major one.
