Sandwich Plate System: Collaboration could result in the collision-proof ship

DNV is renowned for encouraging the development and adoption of new technologies and has a history of working with the industry to jointly develop new processes. This is clearly demonstrated by the level of collaboration between the classification society and Intelligent Engineering (IE), the Canadian company that has pioneered the revolutionary Sandwich Plate System (SPS)

DNV has collaborated with IE over the last four years, giving advice on class requirements and international regulations. The society has also given invaluable input into the extensive computational analysis and testing programme performed by IE.

The first commercial SPS Overlay project was on the DNV-classified ship P&O European Seafarer. The work was carried out in February 2001, but since then nine new SPS Overlay projects has been completed on DNV-classed vessels.

In addition to the SPS Overlays, DNV has given 'Approval in Principle' status to several marine applications such as hatch covers, side and stern ramp doors, and hoistable car decks.

In cooperation with Intelligent Engineering, DNV established a Type Approval Programme for the elastomer material used as core material in the sandwich plate system. Numerous tests have been carried out in order to verify the properties, both of the elastomer material itself and when used in the SPS (such as bonding properties). The manufacturer of the elastomer material, Elastogran GmbH in Germany, was satisfactorily audited and DNV issued the Type Approval Certificate.

The sandwich plate system consists of two metal plates bonded to a solid elastomer core. The elastomer provides continuous support to the plates and precludes local plate buckling and the need for stiffeners (See fig.1 and 2). The flexural stiffness and strength of the sandwich plate is tailored to meet particular static and dynamic structural requirements by selecting appropriate thicknesses for the sandwich elements.

SPS is used both for new construction and, as SPS Overlay, for permanent repair and conversion purposes. In newbuildings, fabrication, performance and safety benefits stem from structural simplification and the properties of the composite material. In repair, SPS Overlay is fast, non-intrusive and low risk.

As SPS structures eliminate the need for stiffeners, they are less complex and time consuming to manufacture than their all-steel equivalents. As an example, the system would eliminate some 32km (50 percent) of stiffeners in a 10 000dwt double-hull coastal tanker.

With fewer corrosion and fatigue prone details, vessels become easier to maintain and significantly cut operational budgets. SPS can be used for hulls decks and superstructures as well for components such as ramps, funnel casings and hatch covers. This was demonstrated last year when SPS panels were used to construct funnel casings for five new FSG ro-ro vessels for DFDS TorLine.

Furthermore, SPS has a number of in-built properties, which make it attractive in an increasingly safety conscious society. These include impact resistance, blast and ballistics - characteristics that are of interest to civil and military sectors for personal safety and cargo and environmental protection.

For the shiprepair market, SPS Overlay bonds a new top plate to the existing structure. This non-intrusive process avoids disturbing below deck services, insulation, piped and electrical service runs, generally reducing project risk and considerable lost operational time.

SPS Overlay applications for the repair and strengthening of structures include: ro-ro deck reinstatement and strengthening, improved impact resistance on bulk carrier tanktops and OSV working decks, hull stiffening and helideck strengthening. A no-hotwork repair solution developed for the oil and gas industry enable in-situ repairs with no downtime.

Currently, DNV and Intelligent Engineering, together with Japan's Kawasaki Heavy Industries working on the design for an SPS version of the innovative SEA Arrow Bow Stem concept in an effort to produce a structure that will significantly minimise damage to ships that suffer collisions. The goal is to increase safety and to reduce risk to cargo and life at sea.
