Chain Fall
Heavy pieces could be raised into position using hand-powered hoists called chain falls. Chain falls worked on the pulley principle, allowing one person to slowly lift hundreds of pounds. The chain falls were supported by the roof trusses and moved back and forth on a track. Bridge components could be moved about the plant on the narrow-gauge railway tracks, then hoisted into position for the next operation using the system of chain falls.
This chain fall has been used to hoist a large box girder into position for the drill press. The chain fall has a large hook on the end (small red arrow), inserted into a chain wrapped around the box girder. |
