Firstly, I don't know what kind/type of ship you are talking about.
Normally, for a single screw cargo ship, the after part is "after peak tank"(shortly called "APT").
In the lower part of the APT, the propeller shaft passing through stern tube. Outside the stern tube there is a ster boss with shell plating connecting to it.
Looking all the way down to the bottom of APT, the bottom space of the APT is very narrow and no special use. So, usually above the bottom of that space a platform with manhole is fitted to cover it. It is thus a "VOID SPACE" ("空舱) being formed there.
As it is a void space, it is very seldom that one would need to get in there, so adequate derusting and painting (or using tar epoxy) is to be done before welding of the said platform.
