1). In most class Rules, the term deep penetration welding refers to a welding process where a type approved deep penetration electrode is applied. the throat thickness for fillet welds may be reduced by 15% when such an electrode is used. A prerequisite is that the electrode is type approved as penetration electrode.
2) The sense of deep penetration welding in most Asian yards is full penetration weld where no back gouging is applied, i.e. without controlling the penetration. In reality this is a partial penetration where the yard achieves, at best a full penetration, at worst a partial penetration with root defects.
So, for deep penetration, it is important to specified the groove topology on the drawings. |
