2 Safer operation and reduction in fuel consumption with innovative mooring system
Retrofitted to FSO vessel Basker Spirit, an innovative mooring system from Trelleborg Harbour Marine is helping to reduce fuel consumption, lowering overall operating costs for Teekay Shipping. This has been achieved with a design incorporating a unique chain stopper that secures the bow single point mooring chain, monitors chain tension and provides emergency release of the ship from its mooring, even if the chain is under tension. Most importantly the crew can operate the unit at a safe distance away from the potentially dangerous chain.
Teekay Shipping, owner and operator of FSO (Floating Storage and Offloading) vessel Basker Spirit, was finding that they needed to operate the thrusters on their ship for extended periods to keep it stationary over its mooring. This resulted in high fuel consumption and to reduce this they approached Trelleborg Harbour Marine, an operating unit within Trelleborg Engineered Systems, for an alternative mooring system.
Trelleborg Harbour Marine worked closely with the client and their team of engineers. To meet specific safety and operational requirements unique to the project, a proven chain stopper design was customized. This involved the redesign of the mounting from the standard horizontal mounting to a vertical one, along with an increased level of remote operation for aligning and releasing the chain. The load monitoring system was also integrated into the vessel's shut down system in case of mooring overload. The completed design incorporates mooring load monitoring and display at multiple locations on board the vessel with continuous load recordings, high load warning and remote release capability. All functionality is available from a dedicated workstation installed within the vessel's CCR (Cargo Control Room).
After the ship's bow was modified, the vertical chain stopper was fitted to a geared hydraulic turntable. This design allowed the vessel to weather vane freely, responding to wind and current forces, minimizing the use of the vessel's thrusters. Made possible by monitoring many aspects of its operation, the chain stopper is rotated on the turntable to maintain the ship in position. This ensures that the chain does not become twisted as the vessel swivels around its single bow chain stopper. There is no interruption to loading operations and the mooring table can be rotated under full load.
The chain stopper's unique remote control system is a major safety feature allowing crews to operate at a safe distance from the chain. Designed to operate up to 300 Tonnes, it is releasable in an emergency at loads up to 200 Tonnes.
The Basker Spirit is located at the Manta Field off the East coast of Australia, transporting crude oil from the offshore field to a refinery in Victoria.
"The operators have recently reported that they are happy with the new mooring unit and its load monitoring system," says Tom Toth, Technical Director at Trelleborg Harbour Marine. "It's helping to successfully meet their goal of ensuring safe operation and maximize the product loading window. With the reduced need to use thrusters there should be significant savings." |
