RACK PHASE DIFFERENTIAL
When reacted by the upper and lower guides, a high bending moment acting on a truss
leg can cause the leg braces within the guides to buckle. Certain truss leg Jack Up
designs are capable of considerable (i.e., visible and measurable) leg distortion before
brace buckling occurs. This distortion, manifested in the form of differential vertical
displacement of the leg chords with respect to a reference horizontal plane, is termed
Rack Phase Differential (RPD). On units with measurable leg distortion before brace
buckling, RPD is a good indicator of brace loading. As such, monitoring of RPD may
be used as a means for reducing risk.
When measuring RPD, it is important to have a standard method of reporting (i.e.,
measuring up or down from the reference point). RPD values can be used to establish
“leg attitudes” (i.e., inclination of the legs), which in turn can be a good indicator as to
the source of the leg bending moment. For instance, when legs are leaning towards
each other, the source of the leg bending moment is likely to be a leg slide. |
