Germany: SAM Electronics Provides Equipment for ‘Celebrity Reflection’
Posted on  Mar 5th, 2013

Celebrity Cruises’ new cruiseliner, Celebrity Reflection, has been equipped with an extensive range of navigation, automation and entertainment systems from SAM Electronics and its associate L-3 companies. Built by Meyer Werft in Germany at a reported cost of $750m, the 315m 126,000-gt vessel was formally named in Miami last December.
Bridge equipment includes a SAM NACOS 65-5 integrated navigation command assembly comprising five S and X-band radars serially linked to a similar number of Multipilot 1100 workstations for combined display of ARPA radar, Ecdis and conning functions as well as integrated operation of automatic steering control. Additonal workstations are also installed on both starboard and port wing areas together with Chartpilot 1100 Ecdis and voyage planning units and secondary display facilities. Supported by an integral 4350 VDR, all other suBSIdiary navaids such as DGPS, doppler log, echosounders and wind sensors, are directly connected to the Multipilot stations for operational purposes.
Control of Celebrity Reflection’s machinery, air-conditioning and emergency shutdown requirements is provided by an L-3 Valmarine Integrated Automation System (IAS) featuring multiple levels of security through superior redundancy. It is capable of processing approximately 16,000 control and monitoring signals of which around 9,500 are hard-wired, with the remainder fed from serial lines. The operator interface consists of five multifunction workstations variously sited in the engine control room, on the bridge and in a designated safety centre. There are also connection points for laptop PCs in machinery spaces and air-handling unit rooms while the emergency shutdown facility operates independently via an interface to the IAS communications network.
Other installed equipment includes a wide range of sophisticated audio and video entertainment facilities from L-3 FUNA International. AV systems include internal and external lighting control and PA networks, hospital and safety call equipment, and dedicated sound-powered telephone and talk-back amenities.
One of the largest cruise ships to have been launched in Germany, Celebrity Reflection is the last of a series of five Solstice-class vessels built by Meyer Werft for Celebrity Cruises. All have been extensively fitted with comparable SAM Electronics navigation, automation and associated systems.
