Korea’s Doosan Engine has revealed that it succeeded in commercialization of electronically controlled dual-fuelled low speed marine engine which can use both LNG and heavy oil.
Under a contract with a design specialist for vessel, DSEC of Korea, Doosan Engine will supply 35,600-horsepower dual-fuelled low speed engine for five 3,100-teu containerships in order from 2014, which the US shipowner TOTE had ordered.
The electronically controlled dual-fuelled low speed engine is mainly fuelled with LNG which price is lower than heavy oil and the heavy oil is used just for supplementary fuel; hence, it reduces operation cost greatly. A release of pollutant such as carbon dioxide and a nitrogenous compound can be drastically cut. There have been a few demonstrations at home and abroad however, this is the first commercialization in history.
Lim Sang-Rok, senior managing director of Doosan Engine, said, “As we now can supply the world’s first electronically controlled dual-fuelled low speed marine engine, our technology is regarded as the best in industry, following electronically controlled low speed marine engine we developed in 2003 for the first time in history.” “Amid stronger regulations on marine environment, we take the advantageous position first in contact competition for environmentally-friendly marine engine.”
