United Arab Shipping Corp (UASC) is reportedly in talks with shipbuilders for mega boxships of up to 18,000TEU class.
UASC, which took delivery of the last newbuilding of nine 13,500TEU series from Samsung Heavy Industries last year, is said to be looking for 14,000TEU and 18,000TEU vessels.
Chief Executive Jorn Hinge said that with economies of scale, bigger ships could save operating costs.
Moreover, by operating fuel-efficient newbuildings, cost saving could be expanded by up to around $200m.
Meanwhile, newbuilding prices of 14,000TEU vessel could be around $108m apiece, the price that a Greek owner is said to be paying for 13,800TEU ships to be leased to Evergreen of Taiwan.
