FMC to deliver 12 oil tankers soon

The FMC Dockyard, a fast growing ship builder in the country, is going to deliver 12 oil tankers of international standard shortly to the local buyers.
The oil tankers are reportedly being built locally for the first time in the country's shipbuilding history, concerned sources said.
The tankers will carry fuel to different oil depots throughout the country under BPC's (Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation) supervision.
The shipbuilder has been awarded a contract for building oil tankers with the capacity of 1,600 tonnes each at a cost of Tk 130 million each by some local shipping companies. An Italy-based surveyor company, RINA, is supervising the work.
The dockyard established at West Gomdandi in Boalkhali upazila adjacent to the River Karnafuli has also got workorders for building four container ships. The keel laying ceremony will be held on October 1.
A senior official of the FMC Dockyard said the length of each ship is 79.50 metres and will be able to carry 144 containers. The ships will transport containers between the Chittagong Port and the Pangaon Container Terminal.
Sources said the ministry of shipping has issued a total of 32 licences for container transportation and these four container vessels are part of that.
General Manager of FMC Dockyard Pankaj Datta told the FE the yard was built only two years back (2010) at a cost of Tk 1.80 billion. The yard has a large infrastructure with backyard facilities, he said adding that the yard workers have built work boats, barge and passenger carrier for use at the yard.
He said the dockyard formally started its journey in early 2011 and built a modern yacht, MV Mahirah, which is now used for pleasure trips in the Sundarbans area under the management of the private tourism agency Green Channel.
"We are building another pleasure boatwith a capacity of 320 passengers for the local tourists of the Saint Martin's island. Ms Eastwood Limited has placed the order with us and it will be operational by the middle of 2013," he said.
He informed the FMC Dockyard built a modern 18-inch dredger at a cost of Tk 150 million which started river dredgingin Barisal in July last.
