CIMC Raffles delivers the SS Pantanal deepwater semi-submersible drilling platform
On 12 November 2010, the first of a series of two semi-submersible drilling platforms being built by Yantai CIMC Raffles Offshore Limited (“CIMC Raffles”) for Schahin Oil and Gas (”Schahin”), the SS Pantanal, was delivered in Yantai.
The basic design for the SS Pantanal was by Friede & Goldman while CIMC Raffles undertook detailed design, production design, construction and commissioning. The delivery of this platform follows an earlier delivery of another platform by CIMC Raffles, the COSLPIONEER (for COSL Drilling Europe AS), on 26 October 2010. The successful delivery of the SS Pantanal is further tes**ent to CIMC Raffles’s status as China’s pioneering offshore rig-builder, in terms of our capacity (series delivery of rigs), credentials and capabilities in high-tech offshore construction.
For the SS Pantanal, CIMC Raffles adopted new construction methods, including completing fabrication on land, launching mega blocks onto a load-out barge, mating the upper and lower hulls using the rig-builder’s landmark 20,000-ton Taisun crane, and installing thrusters underwater alongside its 18-meter deepwater berth. The delivery of the SS Pantanal marks another milestone as CIMC Raffles’s unique, pioneering construction methodology continues to mature and deliver results.
Designed and constructed in accordance with the relevant Panamanian standards, laws and regulations, the SS Pantanal was built to operate in Brazil and the Gulf of Mexico. The platform is classed by ABS and is equipped with a DP2 dynamic positioning system. It has an overall length of 105 meters, a module width of 73.1 meters, a module depth of 34 meters, a tugging draft of 7.3 meters and an operating draft of 16.75 meters. The maximum operating water depth is 2,400 meters, the maximum vertical drilling depth is 7,500 meters and the maximum variable deck load is 5,500 tons. The top drive system of the drilling derrick has the highest loading capacity for its dead-weight which is currently the lightest. The wind load on the platform is kept to a minimum. It has 7 main engines, 1 emergency generator, 8 thrusters, 3 deck cranes and is able to accommodate 148 personnel, which makes it suitable for deployment in most of the oil fields in the world. Featuring a highly optimized design for its drilling system, the SS Pantanal is expected to achieve global, class-leading productivity standards among comparable platforms.
The SS Pantanal is the first semi-submersible drilling platform built for a Brazil client (Schahin Group) by a China rig-builder. It represents the biggest collaboration project between China and Brazil in energy equipment so far. The SS Pantanal will perform exploration work for Petrobras (Brazil’s state oil company) in Brazil after its delivery. |
