Class Oil Recovery Ships (Type 738)
The Navy operates two oil recovery ships of special design: They can open up along their centre axis, thanks to a hinge construction at their stern. The two halves of the hull can be driven apart to form a triangle at an angle of approx. 65°, thus creating an oil recovery surface of over 40 m. The oil film collected in this „triangle“ is sucked off by a skimming device with a fuel-water separation filter system and is stored in the ship‘s holding tanks. With a 2 mm oil film and travelling at a speed of 1 kn, the suction capacity is approximately 140 m.
