What Does This Test Measure?
This test is required where draperies, curtains and other supported textile materials are
required to have qualities of resistance to the propagation of flame not inferior to those of wool of mass 0.8kg/m2. The method provides information on
the fabrics resistance to ignition and sustained flame propagation when exposed to a small igniting flame.
Test Method
This part of the Fire Test Procedures (FTP) Code uses the test method described in IMO
Resolution A.471(XII) as amended by resolution A.563(14).
The test is conducted with a minimum of 10 specimens, 5 lengths and 5 widths for each fabric. If the sample has two sides that can be used in practice
then both sides should be tested.
Pre-tests are carried out before the main test to determine the mode of the flame application. The test can be carried out with either a 5 second or 15
second flame application time and the flame can be either be applied to the face or the edge of the material.
Once the mode of test is determined a further 5 specimens are tested length ways (warp or machine direction) and width ways (weft or cross direction). A
note is also made of any burning drops from thermoplastic fabrics by use of cotton wool on the base of the apparatus.
Due to its nature of being used for Marine conditions it is assumed that the materials for test have either been constructed from inherently flame
resistant materials or have had a permanent fire retardant treatment applied to it. Therefore it is a condition of test that the material should go
through a cleansing procedure that is applicable for it intended use.
Test Results
The following criteria for classification of materials are recommended in IMO Res.
A.471(XII), and amended by IMO Res. A.563(14), as a guidance. Where a different application of the test method is desired, other criteria may be
applicable.
Products which show any of the following characteristics should be considered as unsuitable for use as curtains, draperies or free-hanging
fabric products for use in rooms containing furniture and furnishings of restricted fire risk as defined in Regulation II-
2/3.23.6 of the SOLAS amendments.
• An after flame time greater than five seconds for any of the specimens tested with surface application of the pilot flame.
• Burn through to any edge of any of the specimens tested with surface application of the pilot flame.
• Ignition of cotton wool below the specimen.
• An average char length in excess of 150 mm observed in specimens tested by either surface or edge ignition
• The occurrence of a surface flash propagating more than 100 mm from the point of ignition with or without charring of the base fabric.
NB. If only one of the specimens tested gives poor results, one complete retest may be permitted. Failure of the second batch to meet all of the above
criteria should provide the basis for rejection of the fabric for use.
When Is This Test Conducted?
Draperies, curtains and other supported textile materials which are to be used on board
ships should be tested to this standard.
Specimen Requirements
The specimens should be as representative as possible of the material provided and
should exclude selvages. Specimen dimensions are 220 mm x 170 mm. For a complete test, at least 28 specimens in the warp direction and 28
specimens in the weft dimensions must be available.
