The 'Walk to Work' industry project was initiated and led by DNV GL to develop industry guidance that provides a comprehensive reference source to assist offshore facility operators in achieving safe and efficient personnel transfers to/from their facilities via a gangway system on a workboat, ship or semi-submersible unit. The term 'Walk to Work’ (W2W) is used to describe this mode of offshore facility manning. Offshore facilities may include, but not be limited to, wind turbines, jacket-supported oil and gas production platforms, and anchor-moored floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) ships. The information contained within the W2W Guidance provides organisations involved in, or considering, the implementation of a W2W solution, suppliers of vessels, gangway systems, onshore services and offshore facility modification services, with information to help deliver a suitable, cost effective and regulatory compliant system.

The purpose of the active heave compensation in the gangway is to dampen or stabilize it for the motions of the vessel on the waves, so that persons can transfer safely from a vessel to a stable offshore platform. Usually W2W vessels also have accommodation on board.

Offshore Shipping Online and others write that LR has i***oduced a range of class notations for offshore support vessels (OSVs) to reflect their development and changing service features, while retaining established notations. The new notations cover vessels intended to operate in the renewable sector, for example those servicing the offshore wind market.
LR has also launched the special feature notation, 'W2W' (Walk-to-Work), which is applicable to personnel transfer systems. These systems are now increasingly used not only in the in the renewable sector but also in the oil and gas sector.

LR Class notation W2W is assigned to ships, which ships' designed and constructed and equipped to include personal transfer, e.g. by a motion compensated gangway or similar feature.
