The PLA Naval Air Force is capable of performing a number of roles. Its numbers and technology are behind its anti-ship and air defense operations. Today in our series on the development of the Chinese Navy, we take a look at the Naval Air Force. | The PLA Naval Air Force is capable of performing a number

This is a drill to take out submarines in the Yellow Sea. Commander Zhao Shumin heads a team of ship-borne helicopters.
Bull's eye!
Commander Zhao Shumin of North Sea Fleet said, "In the early days of the regiment, the helicopters could only carry out land-based maneuvers and were responsible for search, rescue, and transport tasks. Today, our copters have anti-submarine, reconnaissance, and guiding capability, and can carry out missions with ocean-going ships."
Seaplanes can take off and land on water.
Their long range and endurance give them an advantage over helicopters during anti-submarine missions.
They can also conduct maritime patrols, search, rescue, and transportation.
Vice Regimental CMDR. Zhu Guanghong of North Sea Fleet said, "Seaplanes have excellent performance at super-low altitude. They can carry out low-altitude penetration, large surface target detection, and harbor mine-laying missions."
The ship-borne helicopter and seaplane are just two examples of over 50 years’development of China's Naval Air Force. Today, the Naval Air Force arms its crew with specialized aircraft such as bombers, fighter-bombers, patrol and reconnaissance aircraft.
Regimental CMDR. Zhan Like of North Sea Fleet said, "Through the training of integrated joint operation, we developed a variety of tactics such as single, double, multiple craft operations, and continue assaults."
The training has produced excellent results. The night-time wave-hop is the hardest. The sea and sky are the same color, creating an illusion in flight. Even a slight carelessness could lead to a crash.
The drills and missions are what's behind the major role of the Naval Air Force in projecting power over the sea. Advancements in technologies and weapons will continue to spread the wings of China's Navy.
