China's Shandong Shipping Corp is looking to order up to 10 very large ore carriers on the back of a long-term charter contract from BHP of Australia.
The Chinese owner plans to invest in more than $500m in total for four-to-ten newbuilding 250,000-dwt VLOCs, with deliveries to start in 2015.
An official from Shandong confirmed the charter deal with the Australian mining giant.
Sources said seven shipyards in China, including Guangzhou Longxue Shipbuilding, Jiangnan Shipyard, Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding, New Times Shipbuilding, Penglai Zhongbai Jinglu Ship Industry, Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Corp and Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding Heavy Industry, are involved in the newbuilding tender.
Some suggest that Shandong is likely to place orders split at two shipyards, each involving two firm newbuildings plus options of three more, and state-owned shipbuilders, possibly Qingdao Beihai and Guangzhou Longxue, are strong candidates.
