Samsung inks 1st LNG-FPSO for Shell South Korea’s Samsung Heavy Industries said today that it has signed newbuilding contracts with four European shipowners for nine tankers and with an Asian owner for one offshore facility worth $750m in total. Further, it announced that it held a signing ceremony for a contract with Royal Dutch Shell to build an Ultra Mega LNG-FPSO. Samsung said although economic crisis is still ongoing, oil prices surpassed $80 a barrel recently and the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) could expand oil production, and against this backdrop shipowners made a move to acquire tanker fleet. It added on top of the latest tanker newbuilding contracts, other owners are also making newbuilding inquiries for standard merchant vessels. Separately, Samsung, France’s Technip and Royal Dutch Shell signed a formal contract to build an LNG-FPSO, which is just the beginning of what would be the world’s largest newbuilding contract ever. In late July last year, Samsung had signed a contract with Royal Dutch Shell to c**truct LNG-FPSOs, together with France’s Technip, its c**ortium partner. Under the agreement, Samsung will exclusively supply LNG-FPSOs to Shell for the next 15 years. The project for the first unit signed this time around will proceed in stages. First, the newbuilding price for the hull of the unit will be fixed in early April. Second, the price for the top side for natural gas production and liquefaction will be determined by the end of this year. The c**truction on the unit will begin in 2012 for delivery in 2016. Industry pundits estimate the newbuilding price of the LNG-FPSO to stand at $4bn to $5bn per unit. The vessel will have a length of 468m, a breadth of 74m and a height of 100m with an annual production capacity of 3.5 million t**. It will be jointly designed by Samsung and Technip and will be c**tructed at the Geoje Shipyard of Samsung in Korea. Samsung president Roh In-sik said, “Including the latest contracts, our order backlog swelled to 190 ships worth $41bn which would make our company busy for as much as 35 months. This year we will further strengthen our market position in the drillship, ice-class tanker and LNF-FPSO sectors and focus on eco-friendly ships, wind turbines and floating facilities businesses.”
