A five and a half-storey house of steel, sitting 20 metres above the sea, measuring 20 metres high and weighing 2500 tonnes, is starting to take shape in Kiel. The Schleswig-Holstein shipyard Nobiskrug is currently building the accommodation platform for the DanTysk offshore wind farm, commissioned by Vattenfall and Stadtwerke München (SWM). The first phase of construction came to an end with the completion of all of the platform’s exterior walls and the parallel construction of the five decks is also going full steam ahead. The steel foundations of the platform, a nearly 40-metre high ‘jacket’ construction, are currently being built at the Nordseewerke in Emden, meaning that the construction of the DanTysk offshore wind farm is creating plenty of added value in the North German shipbuilding industry. The accommodation platform will provide space for around 50 people, who will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of the DanTysk offshore wind farm. It will be occupied 365 days a year, with a rolling shift rotation. As well as providing accommodation for the crew, the accommodation platform will include a catering complex, washing facilities, workshops, storage areas, offices and space for sport and leisure activities. “Our idea of housing service teams in a separate accommodation platform directly on offshore wind farms is a first in Germany. This accommodation platform saves the service and maintenance team from having to travel to the wind farm every day. In this way, we can carry out any pending work very efficiently,” explains Gunnar Groebler, Head of the Renewable Energy Division of the Continental Europe/UK Regional Unit at Vattenfall since the beginning of 2014. “Anyone who has experienced the harsh climate of the North Sea, with its strong winds and waves, will understand that safe working conditions for the maintenance teams on site are essential. The permanent accommodation platform offers a high level of safety and comfort for our teams,” continuesGroebler. The platform is due to be erected in its final position, 70 kilometres west of Sylt, in the middle of the North Sea in 2014. In total there will be 80 wind turbines at the DanTysk offshore wind farm, generating 288 MW of climate-neutral electricity for around 400,000 households. All of the 80 foundations for the DanTysk wind turbines as well as the offshore substation have already been constructed, and the installation of the turbines will begin at the end of March 2014. The commissioning of the wind farm is planned for autumn 2014. Dantysk, March 7, 2014
