STX Offshore & Shipbuilding (STX O&S), a South Korean shipbuilder has won an order for three 51,000DWT tankers from a Greek shipowner. The ordered ships are to be equipped with G-type engine, a model for next-generation mid-size tankers which is low in fuel consumption and more eco-friendly, and can load 5% more cargo as compared to the existing ships. The contract includes options for four tankers of the same type and one 155,000DWT shuttle tanker. These ships will be built at Jinhae Shipyard and delivered in due order by early 2015. Meantime, according to Clarkson, a UK-based shipbuilding and marine service analyst, STX O&S was ranked No. 1 in securing commercial ships by winning orders for 116 general commercial ships of 2.98 million CGT in 2012. And this accounts for 14.2% of 21 million CGT, the total global order for general commercial ships in 2012. Furthermore, STX O&S won orders for 41 tankers (worth USD 1.7 billion) and 16 liquefied gas carriers (worth USD 1 billion). The company also won orders for a total of 14 ships (worth USD 800 million) including ten 5,000TEU containers, registering even performance for all types of commercial ships.
