The pontoons (individual parts of the hatch covers) are connected to one another and can easily and quickly be rolled into or out of position leaving clear hatchways and decks. The normal practice for the lengthwise opening of hatches but sideways opening hatchways are found on large bulk carriers and OBO’s.
