MAN B&W S60MC-C/S60ME-C (Denmark), Diesel engines
A two stroke, crosshead-type, slow-speed diesel engine produced in four, five, six, seven and eight-cylinder in-line configurations. The S60MC-C series was introduced in 1996. The engine model designation with prefix S indicates a super long piston stroke; the suffix -C, in this case, means compact. The Compact series of super long stroke engines feature, compared to the standard models, approximately 10 per cent more power, a lower engine height and a shorter cylinder pitch giving an approximate 10 per cent length reduction, with a similar reduction in weight. The longer piston stroke enables the engine to run at lower speeds and consequently lower propeller speeds, which in turn gives a higher propeller efficiency benefit.Following successful testing of the 'intelligent engine' technology using a prepared 6L60MC on board the M/T Bow Cecil, a new ME Series was introduced in 2001. ME models replicate their MC Series counterparts in major 'hardware' items such as pistons, crankshaft, cylinders and power output, but differ from the MC models in fuel injection and valve operation, which is controlled electronically through hydraulic servo mechanisms thus making the conventional mechanical fuel injection system and camshaft redundant. In 2005 a new Mark 8 series with higher output powers was announced. The original series continues in the programme designated Mark 7.In 2007 the four-cylinder engines were dropped from the entire S60-C series. In 2008 IMO Tier II compliant variants of the S60MC/ME-C7 and S60MC/ME-C8 series were added. The engine model designation with prefix L indicates a long piston stroke and the -C suffix indicates 'compact' |
