A Cosco panamax is said to have been hijacked off the coast of Somalia. Military officials were understood to be attempting to contact the owners of the 76,400-dwt De Xin Hai (built 2008), which is registered on databases as a Cosco Qingdao vessel. The crew onboard a Cosco-owned bulk carrier used improvised high-voltage equipment to fend off an attack by around 30 pirates off Yemen in June. The Chinese media heavily reports on the People’s Liberation Army Navy escorting Chinese vessels through the pirate-infested Gulf of Aden.
