Suez sinking
A tanker sank Friday near the southern entrance to the Seuz Canal.
The vessel, which has been identified as the Elli, had no cargo when it went down but had 60 tonnes of bunkers, according to a Reuters report citing "maritime sources".
Press images show the ship split in half before sinking. The Elli was headed from Yemen to a dry-docking at the Suez Port for maintenance.
The only tanker named Elli in databases is a Worldwide Green Tankers' vessel. All of the 24 or 25 crew members have been rescued from the vessel. A bunkers spill from the ship has been contained.
Maritime traffic has not been affected.
The only tanker with the same name in shipping databases is the 94,300-dwt products tanker Elli (built 1986), but the Reuters report indicates the sunken vessel has a capacity of 59,000 tonnes.
Although the Elli is still listed on the website of Greece's Liquimar Tankers, TradeWinds has reported that the ship was purchased by compatriot Worldwide Green Tankers in December 2007.
A man identifying himself as a manager at Liquimar Tankers told TradeWinds that the ship hasn't belonged to the company for two years.
"I have no information," he said.
No one was available after business hours Friday at Piraeus-based Worldwide Green Tankers, which is tied to a fleet of seven 1980s-built tankers.
The incident is under investigation, and authorities are working to determine how to recover the tanker.
The Lloyd's Register-classed, Panamanian-flagged Elli has protection-and-indemnity cover from American Steamship. |
