Samsung wins $5Bn FLNG deal
SAMSUNG HI of South Korea announced today it has been selected as sole supplier for the Shell FLNG ship programme. The multi-billion dollar contract was won in partnership with French engineering company Technip. It could involve up to 10 FLNG ships, Samsung said. The order was won against stiff competition from Korea’s other major yards Daewoo and Hyundai HI. The Shell-Samsung FLNG design uses a Mark-III membrane-type containment system for the tanks, although an option to substitute this for the SPB containment system is part of the agreement. The Shell FLNG has a length of 456m and a beam of 74m. The first vessel will be deployed at the Northwest Sea Gas Field in Australia from 2016. FLNG units have the potential to place gas liquefaction facilities directly over offshore gas fields, thus precluding the need for long-distance pipelines and extensive onshore infrastructure.
