Dozens of negotiation rounds have taken place between the staff union and yard management over wages during the last months.
Tensions seemed to ease on New Year’s Eve, when a deal was agreed including a KRW 37,000 ($33.97) rise in monthly salary.
Various other benefits were agreed such as a one-off bonus of KRW 2m, a KRW 10,000 increase in “job environment allowance” and a special leave day on 23 February 2015.
November saw workers take industrial action for the first time in almost two decades when they refused to work a scheduled extra hour.
They also staged a partial strike a few days later.
HHI repeated in previous months that an increase of KRW 37,000 is the maximum it can offer.
Although the New Year Eve’s deal included such a pay rise, international media report that workers of the large shipbuilder are not satisfied with safety conditions at HHI’s yards.
