Senior Specialist (Materials and Welding)
Specific Job Responsibilities
1. Take a key role in the Technical Performance Group to ensure that materials and welding problems and issues are dealt with in a consistent manner throughout NE Asia.
2. Provide assistance and technical guidance to shipyards and owners/managers of new building, conversion and existing ship projects in China for any problems associated with Materials, Welding and NDE.
3. Enhance LR’s service delivery by working closely with the Marine Operations Managers, Global Technology Leader and Materials and NDE Department to ensure compliance with the LR Rules and procedures and consistency of application.
4. To recommend and promote best-practice and alternative ways of solving materials related issues to ensure the development of LR Rules and procedures and our methods of assessing compliance.
5. Undertake consultancy and technical investigations to establish and resolve non-standard technical issues that may arise and provide the technical input to any legal claims or contractual disputes.
6. Provide technical training on formal courses for surveyors and clients, shipyards, manufacturers and owners.
7. Coach and mentor surveyors to ensure they have the necessary knowledge, experience and authorisation to undertake materials and NDE surveys.
8. Support the surveyors with routine and complex technical issues in materials, welding and NDE and ensure technical standards are maintained, particularly at materials equipment and component manufacturers.
9. Monitor product certification and reporting as required, to ensure the necessary level of technical content is maintained.
10. Liaise with Materials and NDE Department in London to maintain the list of Approved Manufacturers in PR China.
11. Provide technical advice as to resolve complaints which may arise internally or externally.
12. Support the Asia Business Assurance Manager to ensure technical quality compliance.
13. Participate in the periodical meetings of the Technical Performance Group for NE Asia and propose Material Rule revisions as found to be necessary and agreed to during the meetings.
Specific Job Requirements
1. A degree or equivalent from a tertiary organisation recognised by Lloyd’s Register within the relevant field of engineering or physical science (minimum of two years programme) or
Qualifications from a marine or nautical institution and relevant sea-going experience as a certificated ship’s officer
2. Membership of an appropriate professional institution (e.g. The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining)
3. Chartered Engineer status
4. Proficiency in the English Language commensurate with the work
5. To work in accordance with professional codes of conduct and the IACS code of ethics
6. An in-depth knowledge of Materials, Welding and NDE
7. To pursue Continuing Professional Development in line with professional institution
8. Be able to travel at short notice in line with work commitments |
